Workers and volunteers carrying boxes of food to distribute to needy families

More than 225 families received food during a free holiday meal kit distribution hosted by Riverview Gardens School District on Friday, Dec. 19, at Riverview Gardens High School.

The event, held on a cold morning, was made possible through a partnership between RGSD, The Little Bit Foundation and Operation Food Search. District staff, students and community partners volunteered to distribute food to families throughout the morning.

The distribution began at 9 a.m. and remained open while supplies lasted. Meal kits were provided at no cost and included shelf-stable items such as pasta, soup, vegetables, cereal and snacks. Families also received boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Riverview Gardens School District is considered a food desert, where access to affordable, nutritious food is limited. The distribution helped address food insecurity during the holiday season, and many families expressed gratitude for the assistance.

The event was open to all families in the Riverview Gardens School District and is part of the district’s ongoing efforts to support students and families beyond the classroom.
