Dear Gibson Families,
For the past 10 years, our principal, Dr. Henderson, has continuously advocated with the City of Bellfontaine Neighbors and St. Louis County regarding the need for a traffic light near our school to help alleviate the ongoing traffic and safety concerns during arrival and dismissal times.
Throughout these efforts, one of the ongoing challenges has been determining responsibility for the area surrounding the crosswalk and roadway. Unfortunately, both St. Louis County and the City of Bellfontaine Neighbors have continued to redirect responsibility to one another regarding who oversees this issue, making it difficult for meaningful progress to occur.
In previous years, we were fortunate to have support from a DSO officer who assisted with crosswalk duties. However, due to department shift changes, that support is no longer available.
Most recently, our Instructional Assistant, Mr. Mac, generously volunteered his time to assist families and scholars at the crosswalk each day. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances following a recent car accident, Mr. Mac will be unable to continue crosswalk duties for the remainder of the school year.
The safety of our scholars and families remains a top priority for Dr. Henderson and the Gibson Elementary staff. At this time, we strongly encourage families who share these concerns to make their voices heard by reaching out to local officials, including:
• City of Bellefontaine Neighbors
9641 Bellefontaine Road
St. Louis, MO 63137
Phone: (314) 867-0076
• St. Louis County Council
https://stlouiscountymo.gov/st-louis-county-government/county-council/find-your-councilmember/
•Families may also contact Senator Angela Mosley regarding ongoing traffic and pedestrian safety concerns impacting Gibson Elementary scholars and families.
Missouri Senate Website:
https://www.senate.mo.gov/Senators/Member/13
Phone: (573) 751-2420
Families may also consider organizing or supporting a community petition regarding traffic safety improvements near Gibson Elementary. One voice can begin the conversation, but many voices together can create change.
We appreciate your continued patience, understanding, and partnership as we work together to keep our scholars safe each day.
Sincerely,
Dr. Crystal Henderson
