Elizabeth Austin named Administrator in Charge for Riverview Gardens School District
Riverview Gardens School District announced the appointment of Elizabeth Austin as the Administrator in Charge, following Dr. Scott Spurgeon’s leave of absence until June 30, 2022 and his retirement on that date. The Special Administrative Board made the appointment at its Oct. 26 meeting.
Austin has served as the Assistant Superintendent of Leadership and Accountability and Title IX Coordinator since July 1. In that role, she is responsible for guiding the operations of all K-12 schools. She will now guide operations for the entire school district, until further notice, as the Administrator in Charge.
“Ms. Austin’s experience in a number of large school districts has prepared her well for providing the needed direction and leadership as Administrator in Charge,” stated Special Administrative Board Member (and former Chair) Dr. Lynn Beckwith, Jr. “Her collaborative style of leadership will be very helpful during this transitional period in our district.”
One of Austin’s key initiatives as Assistant Superintendent of Leadership and Accountability and Title IX Coordinator is to lead the District’s efforts in supporting school leadership. Austin is also responsible for ensuring high academic achievement for all schools and scholars helping to ensure schools maintain an environment where teaching and learning are the centerpieces.
Prior to joining RGSD, Austin served as the Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership in Kansas City, Mo., where she led schools in Comprehensive School Improvement status to increased attendance, achievement and graduation rates.
She also served as the Complex Academic Officer for the Hawaii Department of Education in Honolulu.
Austin earned a Master of Arts in Learning and Instruction from California State University - San Marcos and a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from San Diego State University.
